Snow Hydrology

Breadcrumb

We are continuing collections of snow samples as complete vertical profiles at the time of maximum accumulation which integrate total atmospheric deposition from approximately November to April. Chemical and water content measurements are made at a sequence of depths using methods we have developed for very dilute samples (Williams and Melack 1991, Sickman et al. 2001). To estimate mean snow water equivalence we will measure snow depths at several hundred geo-referenced points throughout the Tokopah Valley (Jepsen et al. 2012). Chemistry of non-winter precipitation will be obtained from the Giant Forest NADP site operated by the NPS. Passive ion-exchange-resin (IER) collectors (Fenn et al. 2009) will be deployed. Isotopes of NO3- will be measured in the snow and IER samples.
